About Good Good Good

Good Good Good is an independent media company on a mission to help people feel hopeful and do good. Our team of journalists covers meaningful good news — via our website (goodgoodgood.co), social media accounts (@goodgoodgoodco), and the Goodnewspaper, our monthly print newspaper. We reject toxic positivity, and instead focus on the people, ideas, and movements making meaningful progress toward a better world.

Our work reaches tens of millions of people each month — and our community tells us again and again how much our stories mean to them. The New York Times, Washington Post, Mashable, and others have covered Good Good Good. Our Instagram is followed by world leaders and celebrities. Our impact and reach have scaled a lot since we launched in 2017. But, we’re fully bootstrapped — no venture capital, no outside investors, no billionaire owners. Our revenue comes from our readers and our subscribers, and we’re proud of that. We’re building something to last, and we care about impact, trust, and sustainable long-term growth.

Although our audience is large, our team is intentionally small. We operate as a startup — moving quickly, constantly testing new things, taking ownership, and figuring out how to meet the moment … all while staying true to our values. Everyone on our team has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across different departments and shape the future of the company, regardless of title.

Why join Good Good Good

  • Join a small, high-impact team that reaches tens of millions of people every month
  • Help write the playbook for how independent news succeeds in a challenging era for media, alongside a team that’s growing despite it
  • Work directly with company leadership and have a meaningful voice in how we grow
  • Build your career in an environment that values ownership and curiosity, and rewards people who step up, solve problems, and make an impact

The role

We’re looking for a Managing Editor who will lead all things editorial for our website and the Goodnewspaper, our monthly print newspaper filled with good news. It’s a senior leadership role where you’re very much hands-on. You’ll set content strategy, manage and develop a small editorial team, write stories, edit other people’s work, and build the systems that let us publish well consistently. The Goodnewspaper ships every month on a hard deadline, and you’ll own that deliverable.

You’ll report to the Editor-in-Chief and CEO, and you’ll manage at least one person from day one. Within the first year, we expect to hire at least one more writer, who will also report to you. The role will grow as the company grows.

We don’t use AI to write any of our journalism. (Humans only!)

What this role looks like week to week

  • Roughly 45% of your time goes to planning, writing, and editing articles for the website.
  • Roughly 45% goes to brainstorming, managing, and writing for the Goodnewspaper.
  • And 10% goes to people management, scheduling, and logistics.

The newspaper runs on a monthly cycle — with some weeks’ Goodnewspaper tasks being busier and other weeks being lighter. (We already have awesome systems in place! Making the Goodnewspaper every month is the thing our team is the very best at!) Each Goodnewspaper is roughly 14 pages of written content.

On the digital side, we publish good news articles at volume. You’d write around two web stories a day. Our approach is curatorial, and fast. We want to be super specific about that, because it’s not a fit for every journalist. The way we think of it: Good news exists in the world, but it’s hard for our audience to find on their own. They trust our voice. Our job is to bring good news to our readers — in our style, with clarity and accuracy, in a timely fashion. It is not long-form enterprise reporting. If what you want is three weeks on a single investigative feature, this job will frustrate you. Writing well at speed is a real skill, and the people who do well here find that pace energizing instead of draining.

What you’ll do

Editorial strategy and content

  • Lead content strategy across the website and the Goodnewspaper, including a clear editorial POV and an ongoing pipeline of story ideas
  • Write original stories for the website and the Goodnewspaper, and edit work from other team members and contributors
  • Oversee republishing aligned articles from partner publications
  • Write headlines that are clear and specific
  • Make sure everything we publish meets our standards for accuracy, tone, voice, and formatting

Print production

  • Produce each monthly issue of the Goodnewspaper, from the brainstorm session through final “send to print” export
  • Clearly plan and communicate the schedule for each edition of the newspaper, including deadlines for writing, editing, illustrations, and printing
  • Coordinate with writers, designers, interview subjects, and contributors to deliver each issue on schedule, at the quality our print subscribers expect

Team and leadership

  • Manage, coach, and develop at least one direct report from day one, with more hires expected within the first year. Our team is made up of people who are already excellent at what they do, so the job is to give clear direction and then trust them to run with it
  • Build repeatable editorial processes so the team can grow while maintaining high reporting standards

Growth and performance

  • Use traffic analytics, revenue data, and engagement metrics to inform editorial decisions — pragmatically building a content strategy around what works
  • Grow website traffic and revenue

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years of journalism experience, including writing, editing, and managing news content across digital and/or print
  • Experience managing other journalists or editors. (You’ve given feedback that made someone’s work better!)
  • Strong writing and editing, with a sharp eye for clarity, accuracy, and tone
  • The organization skills to juggle multiple deadlines, workflows, and contributors at once
  • Comfort using data (traffic analytics, SEO metrics) to inform editorial decisions
  • Familiarity with print production. You’ve been part of getting a physical publication out the door.
  • A clear editorial POV paired with pragmatism. You can develop good story ideas and also think about efficiency, revenue, and what actually brings in eyeballs
  • Interest in building systems and processes that make a small team more effective
  • Comfort covering social issues, human rights, climate, and politics with nuance and care — and the curiosity to keep learning
  • A curatorial sensibility. You know how to build an experience around a theme instead of just assembling a set of stories. You’ve got a sense for knowing when something is a little bit off
  • The ability to explain complex subjects to a general audience. You can go deep on a topic you didn’t know last month and come out with something clear

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with mission-driven or solutions-oriented reporting
  • Relationships with syndication platforms and partners
  • Experience growing digital traffic and revenue. If you’ve owned web strategy and can point to results, we’d love to hear about it!

You’ll probably love this job if

  • You want values-driven work that genuinely makes a difference
  • You’ve watched a story go from 300 readers to 30,000 and gone back to figure out exactly why (and how to do it again!)
  • You have your favorite news podcasts that you listen to daily (and still find yourself critiquing how your favorite hosts covered some topics)
  • You’ve gotten into arguments about em dashes and the Oxford comma (and you’re mad that people now associate good grammar with using AI)
  • You have opinions about Google Discover, you know H1 and Open Graph are different headlines doing two different jobs, and you lowkey wish you knew less about SEO
  • You think a lot about the current state of journalism and the media industry
  • A monthly print deadline feels like a satisfying puzzle rather than a source of dread
  • You’ve already noticed spelling errors or formatting inconsistencies in this job description
  • You’re the resident optimist of your friend group
  • You want to get good news right, because a lot of people get it wrong

This might not be the right fit if:

  • You want to spend a month reporting a single feature
  • You’d rather not manage or mentor anyone
  • You want editorial work that stays fully separate from how the business makes money

Compensation and details

  • Salary: $70,000–$76,000 a year, depending on experience
  • Location: fully remote (USA)
  • Type: full-time
  • Reports to: Editor-in-Chief and CEO
  • Profit share: all team members take part in our profit share program

Benefits

  • 20 days of PTO a year
  • 13 paid holidays: your birthday, New Year’s Day, MLK Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, 4th of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. (Plus a 25% workload week between Christmas and New Year’s)
  • 10 paid sick days a year, separate from PTO
  • Health insurance (QSEHRA) — GGG contributes the maximum amount allowed by law toward your health insurance premiums and medical expenses — for you and your family. You choose your own plan, and reimbursements are tax-free
  • 401(k) with a safe harbor employer match — 100% on your first 3% and 50% on the next 2%, fully vested from day one
  • 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster placement, for birthing and non-birthing parents alike
  • $750 a year for learning and development: books, courses, conferences, and anything that makes you better at your job
  • A company MacBook and job-critical software
