Contributing Writer

We’re hiring four exceptional writers to cover the following desks: Salmon, Environment, New Economies, & Indigenous Leadership.

Each writer will apply for one of the aforementioned topics and commit to research, pitch, and write one regular feature per month (1,000 to 1,500 words) for six months.

Location: This position is remote but you must be located in Salmon Nation: Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, western Montana, Oregon, Washington, or the Yukon.

Magic Canoe seeks to establish four leading, trusted voices to cover specific organizational priorities, or “desks”:

• Salmon
• Environment
• New Economies
• Indigenous Leadership

Each contributing writer will apply for one of the aforementioned topics and, if hired, commit to research, pitch, and write one regular feature per month (1,000 to 1,500 words) for a period of six months, on the most pressing issues, inspiring stories, and surprising innovations in the given category.

The contributing writer will work closely with the managing editor to fulfil this cadence of publishing in a timely and consistent manner for the Magic Canoe platform, helping to coordinate visual assets as needed. 

We’re seeking motivated, experienced voices with a strong sense of curiosity, cultural sensitivity, and conviction to share stories that matter, of people and collective movements that are meeting this moment of polycrisis head-on with vision and possibility, a systems-level acuity and fierce hope for a regenerative and equitable future.

What’s Magic Canoe?

Magic Canoe champions place-based, locally-driven solutions and regenerative ways of living that inspire change throughout Salmon Nation. 

We combine solutions journalism and visual storytelling to uplift innovative, solutions-forward ideas led by community leaders, problem solvers, and conservation advocates—determined changemakers actively creating more equitable economies, resilient communities, and a healthier environment in Salmon Nation, the rich bioregion that stretches from Northern California to Alaska.

What Are the Primary Roles and Responsibilities?

• Follow the assigned topic of inquiry and identify/pitch emergent storylines, narratives, and changemakers in the specific field. 
• Write one (1) regular feature article per month while connecting it to the greater bioregional movement. 
• Assist the managing editor in acquiring visual assets and art to complement the final layout. 

What Are the Required Skills?

• Previous work published about the bioregion.
• Ability to deliver timely, clean work on deadline.
• Possess a complex understanding of bioregionalism and regenerative movements in Salmon Nation. 
• Experience writing and editing work using Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and Google Sheets.
• Possess an unusually high level of self-starting motivation, as well as intellectual and creative proactivity to find and tell compelling stories.
• Ability to hold a high level of professionalism and attention to detail when representing Magic Canoe.  

Further Details:

• Rate: $1,000, paid monthly. (6-month contract) 
• Deliverables: One feature article per month (1,000 – 1,500 words) 
• Location: Remote (must be located in Salmon Nation: Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, western Montana, Oregon, Washington, and the Yukon)
