Job Summary
Communications Specialist and Technical Writer
Artemis seeks a Communications Specialist/Technical Writer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Specialty Care Program Office (SCPO). SCPO provides national leadership, governance, and oversight for specialty care programs, Centers of Excellence, and enterprise initiatives across VHA, and relies on clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate communication and documentation to support program execution, stakeholder engagement, and Veteran-facing outreach.
Primary Responsibilities
The Communications Specialist/Technical Writer plans, writes, and edits content for internal and external audiences to keep SCPO leadership and stakeholders informed of program developments, initiatives, and updates. This includes drafting executive correspondence, briefings, talking points, and scripts for SCPO leadership; developing communication plans and strategies to support program milestones, events, and cross-team initiatives; and researching, writing, and editing newsletters, fact sheets, frequently asked questions (FAQs), reports, and web content. The role ensures all content aligns with applicable VA documentation standards, including the VA Documentation Style Guide, plain language requirements, and Section 508 accessibility standards.
The Communications Specialist/Technical Writer also gathers, analyzes, and composes technical information required for user manuals, training materials, installation and administrator guides, proposals, reports, and other program deliverables developed in support of SCPO's program, data, budget, and automation initiatives. The incumbent also edits functional descriptions, system specifications, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and other technical documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and proper use of technical or healthcare terminology to translate complex technical and clinical information into clear, readable content usable by both technical and non-technical SCPO stakeholders.
