We are one of Africa's leading creative & digital media organisations and we are looking for a creative and driven Storytelling Assistant to shape the public voice of a sub-Saharan African project working to secure digital rights and strengthen digital democracy on the African continent.
This role is for a storyteller who can move with ease between strategy and creativity, someone who understands how stories travel, how audiences engage, and how digital platforms can become spaces for solidarity, resistance, learning and action. If you can craft powerful narratives, build engaging digital campaigns, and bring digital civic space stories to life across platforms and borders, we would love to learn more about your profile.
Key Responsibilities
- Creating compelling online stories that simplify civic, social and political issues for public audiences.
- Developing narrative-driven content that encourages civic engagement, public participation and youth involvement in national conversations.
- Supporting the production of digital storytelling content, including short videos, reels, social media posts, explainers, photo stories, scripts and campaign narratives.
- Transforming complex civic issues, policies, laws and current affairs into accessible and engaging stories for young people.
- Working with project teams to identify strong story angles that connect civic issues to people's everyday lived experiences.
- Supporting the development of creative campaigns that use storytelling to drive awareness, dialogue and action.
- Writing and adapting content for different digital platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube, LinkedIn and websites.
- Applying a strong understanding of social media algorithms to improve content reach, engagement and visibility.
- Monitoring online trends, conversations and audience behaviour to identify opportunities for relevant and timely storytelling.
- Supporting the development of social media calendars, campaign plans and content roll-out strategies.
- Creating content that balances creativity, accuracy, civic responsibility and audience engagement.
- Supporting corporate and civic communications by helping package organisational work, project updates, public campaigns and partner activities in a clear and professional way.
- Assisting with writing captions, scripts, newsletters, press materials, partner updates and digital campaign copy.
- Working with designers, videographers, editors and content creators to produce visually strong and story-led digital content.
- Bringing a film and storytelling lens to digital content by supporting scripting, shot ideas, storyboarding, interview questions and narrative structure.
- Helping document project activities, events and campaigns through stories, interviews, short-form videos and human-interest content.
- Identifying community voices, youth perspectives and lived experiences that can strengthen civic storytelling.
- Supporting the collection of testimonials, quotes, case studies and success stories for communications and donor reporting.
- Ensuring that all storytelling outputs align with the organisation's values, tone, brand and mission.
- Using analytics and audience insights to improve future storytelling formats and communication strategies.
- Supporting live event coverage, including posting updates, capturing key moments and creating real-time digital content.
- Keeping track of emerging digital tools, storytelling formats and platform changes that can strengthen online civic engagement.
- Working with teams across the organisation to ensure stories are relevant, timely, youth-focused and creatively packaged.
- Supporting any other communications, storytelling and content-related tasks assigned by the project lead or communications team.
Minimum Qualifications
- The ideal candidate should have a degree or professional qualification in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Digital Media, Marketing, Public Relations, International Development, Human Rights, Political Science, Creative Writing or a related field.
- A strong portfolio of previous storytelling, campaign, social media, writing, video, or digital content work will be highly valued. Equivalent practical experience in creative media, digital campaigning or strategic communications may also be considered.
Professional Experience
Experience working on multi-country, Pan-African or Sub-Saharan African projects will be a strong advantage, especially within civic space, human rights, democracy, digital rights, media freedom, youth engagement or social justice work.
