Hiring for marketing at a high-growth startup isn’t just about resumes.
It’s about finding people who can actually thrive in this kind of environment. Fast pace, big swings, and lots of unknowns.
Some of our biggest plays take months to plan. That’s why my team runs 70% strategy (the bets we know will work) and 30% room to test and pivot.
You need to balance structure with agility and shift gears when the moment calls for it.
After nearly 3 years here, these are the 4 traits I’ve come to really value:
1. You move fast even when things take time
Just because something takes months to launch doesn’t mean we can slow down. I look for people who keep urgency alive inside a long timeline, who can plan thoughtfully but stay ready to jump when the moment strikes.
2. You’re strategic, but never too cool
Yes, we work on a big-picture strategy. But we’re also the ones stapling agents’ reports the night before a big event (IYKYK). The best marketers just do what needs to be done.
3. You’re okay starting with a blank doc
Sometimes the brief is just a business problem. We need people who can navigate ambiguity, ask the right questions, and help build the roadmap
4. You can stick to a strategy AND still adapt
We commit to big bets. But we also leave room to respond to signals, test something new, and pivot fast. The marketers who thrive here know how to evolve the playbook while staying grounded in the goal.
PS: We’re hiring a Content Writer that will work closely with my team on ecosystem activations - tag someone that would be a good fit:
