Role Overview: The Publishing Assistant is a vital engine room role at Noisy Streetss Publishing. You will provide direct editorial and administrative support to the Editor-in-Chief, ensuring that our manuscripts, author relationships, and inventory are managed with excellence. This is an entry-level position designed for someone who is eager to learn the “how-to” of the African publishing industry from the inside out.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Associate Editor & Editor-in-Chief with proofreading, copy-editing, and formatting manuscripts.
  • Monitor the submissions inbox, log new entries, and conduct initial vettings for the editorial team.
  • Maintain an up-to-date directory of authors, managing correspondence and ensuring all contact data is accurate.
  • Assist in tracking book inventory, managing distribution logs, and ensuring orders are fulfilled accurately.
  • Organise meetings, take minutes, and manage the editorial calendar to ensure all project deadlines are met.
  • Act as the primary monitor for all publishing social media accounts, ensuring we engage with our audience and respond to queries.
  • Along with the digital manager, draft engaging captions, monitor literary trends, and ensure our digital presence reflects the Noisy Streetss Publishing brand.
  • Participate in work training sessions to master publishing software, industry trends, and the specific “Noisy Streetss Publishing” service model.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a 2:1 (Upper Second Class) degree from a reputable university. First Class graduates are strongly preferred.
  • Degree in Literature, English, Mass Communication, or Law preferred.
  • A demonstrable interest in African literature and the contemporary publishing market.
  • Impeccable command of the English language (written and spoken).
  • Good with social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, TikTok) and an understanding of how to engage a literary community online.
  • Exceptional organisational skills
