We’re recruiting for roles across the following fixed term positions:

- Associate Editor
- Senior Editor
- Journalist / Writer (Mid-level)
- Senior Writer (Social Impact focus)
Across all roles, we’re looking for people who combine strong editorial judgment or execution skills with empathy for audiences, attention to detail, and the ability to work in fast-moving, collaborative environments.
The right candidates will be proactive, self-directed, and with a genuine interest in Africa’s social issues, gender, health, governance, and youth culture.

Journalist/Writer (Policy, Politics, Governance and Social Issues) – Mid-Level, Contract Role
About the role Big Cabal Media is seeking a mid-level Journalist with strong creative writing and analytical skills to contribute to our Social Impact portfolio. This role is suited to a reporter who can interrogate systems, policies, and power structures while centring human stories. You will produce original reporting that makes complex public-interest issues accessible, relevant, and compelling to African audiences.
- Key responsibilities
- Research, report, and write features, analyses, and explanatory pieces on policy, politics, governance, and social issues
- Conduct interviews with policymakers, experts, and affected communities
- Translate technical or policy-heavy material into clear, engaging narratives
- Collaborate with editors on story framing, revisions, and publication timelines
- 4–6 years of journalism or reporting experience
- Strong analytical thinking and creative storytelling skills
- Demonstrated interest in governance, public policy, or social justice issues
- Ability to work across long-form features and timely analysis
