Technical Writer, Enterprise Knowledge Base (Freelance/Contract)

Location: Remote (Must be available weekdays from 9-15:00 CEST)


About the Role

We're looking for a Technical Writer who makes complicated things feel straightforward, and someone who can break down complex product concepts into documentation that's clear, practical, and easy to act on.

As a dedicated writer for Semrush's knowledge base, you'll create and maintain customer-facing documentation across our Enterprise product suite and wider Semrush platform. Your content will serve two audiences: customers looking for fast, reliable answers, and the AI-powered support systems that surface those answers in real time.

You'll work closely with Product Managers, Customer Success, and other content team members to translate technical product knowledge into practical guidance and keep documentation current as features evolve. The right person has a working understanding of SEO or AI search, writes with clarity and precision, uses AI tools to move fast, and is energized by making powerful tools feel intuitive.


What You'll Do

Write and Maintain Knowledge Base Content

Produce a full range of content types for Knowledge Bases, covering both Semrush Core and Enterprise products: get-started walkthroughs, feature guides, how-to’s, glossaries, troubleshooting articles, FAQs, and integration guides. Every piece should help users complete a task, understand a concept, or resolve an issue independently.

Structure Content for People and AI

Write with both audiences in mind — short paragraphs, descriptive headings, and clear language that AI systems can parse and surface accurately, while staying skimmable and useful for customers reading directly.

Translate Internal Knowledge into Customer-Facing Documentation

Work from internal docs, product specs, and SME input to create public-facing content. This requires a sharp eye for identifying and removing internal-only information — proprietary processes, internal tooling, pricing details, admin procedures — while preserving technical accuracy.

Use AI Tools to Work Efficiently

Integrate AI writing and research tools into your workflow to accelerate drafting, editing, and structuring. We’re looking for someone who uses AI as a productive advantage while applying their own judgment to the final output.

Collaborate Cross-Functionally

Partner with Product, Customer Success, and content team members to align documentation with product releases, address friction points, and support broader education initiatives.


What You Bring

Technical Writing Experience. 3+ years writing customer-facing documentation for software products, ideally SaaS or enterprise platforms. You know how to structure a knowledge base article, write clear steps, and explain complex features without overwhelming the reader.

SEO, AI Search, and Semrush Knowledge. A working background in SEO, AI-powered search, or digital marketing. You should understand the core concepts, terminology, and workflows well enough to write about them credibly. Hands-on experience with Semrush is essential — you've used the platform professionally and understand how its tools fit into real workflows.

AI Tool Proficiency. You actively use AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) in your writing workflow and can demonstrate how they help you produce better output faster. You understand their strengths and limitations.

Ability to Simplify Complexity. You can take a dense internal document or a technical conversation and turn it into something a customer can follow in five minutes.

Editorial Discipline. Clean, consistent copy that follows style guides. Comfortable with review cycles and feedback. Gets the details right.


Nice to Have

  • Experience writing for knowledge bases that feed AI support tools (Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI, or similar)
  • Familiarity with knowledge base platforms and CMS tools
  • Enterprise or B2B SaaS background
  • Video scripting or multimedia content experience
