We are seeking an experienced freelance editor with a background in traditional publishing to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of the full editorial process and can uphold the rigorous standards required by trade publishers.
This is a remote, freelance (1099) position, approximately 5–20 hours a week, that requires a response time of 24 hours or less.
Responsibilities:
- Apply an expert editorial eye to ensure consistency, clarity, and adherence to house style guidelines
- Execute copyediting, proofreading, and cold reading in alignment with The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th Edition
- Review and assess project deliverables against client-specific style guides, product specifications, and publishing production schedules
- Work fluently in Microsoft Word Track Changes and Google Drive across concurrent projects and clients
- Follow detailed editorial process documents with precision and consistency
A successful candidate will:
- Have direct experience working within a traditional publishing house, literary agency, or as a freelance editor serving trade publishers
- Demonstrate mastery of The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition and working familiarity with the AP Stylebook and other style guides
- Understand traditional publishing workflows, including editorial calendars, production timelines, and the relationships between editorial, design, and production departments
- Be organized, confident, and able to manage multiple manuscripts, deadlines, and client standards simultaneously without sacrificing quality
- Be tech savvy and comfortable interacting, training, and completing assignments in a remote environment (Google Drive, Slack, Dropbox, etc.)
- Be able to follow detailed process documents and communicate professionally and proactively with an editorial production team
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree a relevant field of study or equivalent work experience
3+ years of editing experience
2+ years in a similar role
- Mastery of the English language and The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th Edition, (and a passing knowledge of other style guides)
- Styling and macros experience is a plus but not required
