Direct Response Copywriter

About the Role

This is a hands-on execution role. You'll write daily — ads, landing pages, emails — and learn fast from performance data. You'll conduct deep research to uncover what actually persuades our customers, then translate that into copy that drives clicks, conversions, and revenue. The ideal candidate is obsessed with buyer psychology and can turn insights into revenue-driving copy.

This is not a strategy or management role. You're here to write copy that converts, iterate based on data, and consistently beat controls.

Uproot Clean is a 9-figure pet care brand scaling rapidly across DTC and major retail (Walmart, Target, Chewy). Our growth engine is pure Direct Response.

We run seven figures monthly across Facebook, Google, and YouTube, and your work has an immediate, massive impact. Here, copy doesn't sit in a Google Doc awaiting layers of approval—it goes live, gathers data, and wins or gets cut.

  • You want to write direct response copy daily and judge success by performance, not opinions
  • You think in hooks, angles, benefits, and offers—and know how to turn psychology into sales
  • You actively study what's working, apply it fast, and improve through iteration
  • You take feedback and data seriously and use both to sharpen your copy
  • You're driven, self-directed, and accountable for output and results

This Role Is NOT For You If:

  • You rely on brand language, trends, or "clever" copy instead of clear, conversion-focused DR
  • You need heavy direction, struggle to produce consistently, or get attached to your first draft
  • You don't have a working understanding of funnels, offers, and customer objections
  • You'd rather talk strategy than write, test, and iterate

What You'll Do

Research-Driven Copy Development

  • Conduct deep research before writing: customer reviews, support tickets, forums, competitor analysis, clinical studies, and credible third-party sources
  • Identify and validate what is actually true about the product, customer, and problem
  • Extract real proof, mechanisms, and specific insights to support claims
  • Uncover unique, defensible angles rather than justify preconceived ideas
  • Ground all copy in facts and understanding, not vague language or clever phrasing

Direct Response Copywriting

  • Write high-converting ad copy weekly for paid social, search, and performance channels
  • Write conversion-focused landing pages on a regular cadence
  • Write revenue-driving email campaigns for promotions, launches, and lifecycle flows
  • Adapt messaging across formats while maintaining clarity and persuasion

Testing & Optimization

  • Iterate on hooks, angles, headlines, and CTAs based on performance feedback
  • Collaborate with media buyers, retention managers, and creative teams to test new concepts
  • Analyze winning and losing copy to continuously improve results

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with design, media buying, and email teams to align copy with creative execution
  • Participate in creative brainstorms to generate new angles and hypotheses
  • Support product launches with clear, compelling, benefit-driven messaging

Market & Customer Understanding

  • Study customer reviews, objections, and language patterns to inform copy
  • Analyze competitor ads and funnels to identify opportunities
  • Apply proven psychological triggers while avoiding gimmicks or hype

Requirements

Must Have:

  • 3+ years of hands-on direct response copywriting experience
  • At least 1 year of writing in supplements, health, beauty, or adjacent regulated categories
  • Proven track record of writing copy that converts (portfolio examples or performance metrics)
  • Strong understanding of funnels, offers, and buyer psychology
  • Excellent written American English — clear, direct, and persuasive
  • Comfortable with feedback and fast iteration cycles
  • Self-motivated and execution-focused
  • Full-time availability during US EST hours
  • Fixed, reliable workspace (not digital nomad)
