---

Global Witness is looking for a skilled, proactive and experienced communications consultant to lead and coordinate strategic communications work across the organisation, with a particular focus on our Annual Defenders Report.

We are an independent, global organisation of investigators and campaigners. We shine a light on the financial and political systems that damage the environment and human rights. For over 30 years, Global Witness has pioneered an approach that merges bold investigations with determined campaigning to secure better protections for people and our planet.

The organisation works across several interrelated pillars: fossil fuels, forests, critical minerals, big tech, and environmental defenders.

We partner with media organisations to publish our investigations, in order to shape policy, shift narratives and create lasting impact.

This includes building communications plans, managing and supporting press engagement, as well as shaping and delivering strategic communications outputs (e.g. press releases, statements, op-eds, social media posts) in partnership with our campaigners and investigators.

About the role

The consultant will work closely with the Head(s) of Media, wider communications directorate, campaigns, policy and investigation teams.

This role is a minimum two-month consultancy role with a time commitment of 4 days per week. We are looking to hire someone on a day-rate of £300.

The consultant will be expected to attend weekly communications team meetings, support our busy press office and lead on the delivery of our landmark Annual Defenders Report, alongside other investigations and reports.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead on strategic communication plans, messaging development and media outreach for Global Witness’ landmark annual defenders’ report and other investigations
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for media coverage in specialist and mainstream outlets
  • Draft press releases, statements, op-eds and other strategic communication outputs (i.e. social media posts)
  • Record and evaluate media coverage and campaign impact
  • Work with the wider communications directorate to coordinate and develop high quality content (this may include supporting the creation of social media posts, videos, podcasts, web content and print materials)

Person specification

Essential

  • Significant experience in a media, press or communications role, ideally within campaigning, advocacy or media organisations
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to craft compelling narratives and clear messaging for varied audiences
  • Demonstrated success in developing and delivering effective media strategies that achieve high-profile, impactful coverage
  • Excellent media relations skills, with a strong network of journalist contacts and a clear understanding of what makes a story land
  • Fluent in English
  • Experience managing press launches and announcements, including under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple projects with competing priorities
  • Ability to build rapport and trust quickly with team members, journalists and key stakeholders
  • Good grasp of Global Witness’ voice and agenda

Desirable

  • Knowledge of international environmental and climate justice issues, especially Latin America-focused land and environmental defenders
  • Fluent in Spanish and/ or Portuguese
  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-pressure communications environments
  • Knowledge of global media landscape and experience of engaging with media in multiple regions or languages
  • Experience working with spokespeople, including preparation and media training
  • Familiarity with media monitoring and evaluation tools and techniques
  • Ability to travel into our London office (near Cambridge Heath station) at least one day a week
