About the job
We are seeking a dynamic, self-motivated professional to fill the role of Digital Content Writer (Content Designer). In this position, you will be responsible for writing, editing, and proofreading copy for public-facing digital channels. Working closely with cross-disciplinary design teams, you will develop innovative content that delivers a best-in-class user experience, connecting with clients through a brand personality that is trustworthy, helpful, and friendly.
Your primary responsibility is to follow, create, and maintain editorial standards, ensuring fully optimized content is on-brand, meets user and business goals, and maintains a consistent voice and tone. You will bring content to life with human-centric copy that leverages a deep understanding of strategic insights, business goals, and user needs, moving the dial on site-wide enhancements one word, one page, and one project at a time. This role requires flexibility, strong attention to detail, exceptional interpersonal skills, and the ability to meet tight timelines, embrace new technologies, and adapt quickly to change.
This role is a 6-month contract, which requires the talent to work on a hybrid basis at our client's office in downtown Toronto.
Responsibilities
Research & Strategy
- Support projects in their initial phase by conducting content strategy tasks and UX research as needed.
- Perform competitive research, content inventories, and draft usability questions and wireframe copy.
- Understand business strategies and target audiences to ensure content alignment and determine the messaging needed to support initiatives.
Content Creation & Editorial Management
- Manage all facets of the editorial process throughout a project's lifecycle, including supporting French translation.
- Write, edit, and proofread original and supplied copy, ensuring cohesive, compelling delivery that communicates the core value of products and services.
- Ensure content meets established style, brand, voice, tone, and quality standards, making copy clear, concise, conversational, and searchable across all channels and viewports.
- Apply SEO tactics to increase site visibility, click-throughs, authority, engagement, and sales.
- Incorporate accessibility best practices and inclusive writing principles to ensure the audience feels welcomed and valued.
- Conduct content walkthroughs with project teams and external stakeholders, including business, marketing, regulatory, and legal groups.
- Proactively move pages through the editorial workflow, address questions/feedback, collect signoffs, and maintain version controls within copy decks.
- For Senior Content Designers: Contribute to style guide reviews/updates, maintain voice/tone standards across the broader content team, and proactively drive site-wide enhancements outside of regular project work.
Content Authoring & Technical Support
- Build pages in the Content Management System (CMS) consistently, accurately, and independently.
- Troubleshoot and address content defects.
- Provide content and authoring support during project implementations (program launches), which may occasionally include evenings and weekends.
Subject Matter Expertise & Training
- Remain current on emerging web technologies, accessibility standards, mobile applications, and SEO.
- Build and maintain core knowledge of digital platforms and channels.
- Help onboard and train team members on editorial workflow, content creation, and CMS authoring guidelines.
- For Senior Content Designers: Review copy decks to ensure a consistent voice and tone throughout all digital properties.
Relationship Management & Collaboration
- Foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders and consistently advocate for excellent content.
- Collaborate with UX and visual design teams to deliver sound content that meets business objectives and user needs while elevating the client experience.
Requirements
Must-Have Skills and Qualifications:
- Degree in English, Marketing, Journalism, or Technical Writing (or equivalent work experience) with strong English language proficiency.
- 2+ years of experience in a digital marketing or digital editorial environment (3+ years of digital writing/editing experience required for intermediate; 5+ years required for senior level).
- 2+ years of excellent working knowledge of CP Style.
- 2+ years of experience writing marketing-type content, writing for the web, and/or developing digital properties.
- 2+ years of experience working within cross-disciplinary teams of UX and Creative Designers.
- Tech-savvy mindset with an openness to learning new technologies, such as Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) CMS, Confluence, and Jira.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to liaise with and present content to stakeholders.
- Strong soft skills: Effective relationship management, meticulous attention to detail, process orientation, and a collaborative, team-player attitude.
- High degree of initiative, strong time management, and the ability to work with minimal direction while responding to shifting business needs.
Nice-to-Have Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience with AEM or a similar enterprise CMS.
- Familiarity with enterprise project methodologies and publishing/workflow tools.
- Previous experience working directly with Product Design Leads.
- Familiarity with the principles of content strategy and inclusive writing.
- Familiarity with WCAG 2.0 Accessibility Standards and plain language principles.
- Working knowledge of SEO and user experience (UX) design principles.
- Familiarity or working knowledge of Figma.
- Previous professional experience within the financial or banking industry.
