Description
The Botanical Bar is an independent, Black woman-owned plant shop in downtown Indianapolis offering houseplants, plant-care products, gifts, workshops, private events, and community experiences. Our mission is to reconnect people with nature while creating an inclusive space where plant people can meet, learn, and grow.

The Social Media Marketing Intern will participate in a hands-on, work-based learning experience focused on content creation, digital marketing, brand storytelling, and small-business growth. The intern will help develop content that promotes our products, workshops, events, plant-care education, and in-store experiences across Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

The intern will be supervised and mentored by The Botanical Bar's founder, who has extensive professional experience in brand marketing, event marketing, community engagement, and entrepreneurship. The intern will receive:

  • A structured onboarding and brand orientation
  • Weekly one-on-one check-ins and project guidance
  • Training in brand voice, content planning, campaign development, and performance measurement
  • Feedback on photography, short-form video, graphic design, and written content
  • Opportunities to observe how marketing decisions connect to customer engagement and business goals
  • A final performance review and portfolio feedback

By the end of the experience, the intern should be able to independently develop a basic social media campaign, create polished multimedia content, maintain a content calendar, evaluate campaign performance, and explain how social media supports the goals of a small retail business.

Responsibilities
The Social Media Marketing Intern will complete guided projects that provide practical experience in content creation, campaign planning, audience engagement, and marketing analysis.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assist with developing a weekly and monthly social media content calendar
  • Create original photos, Reels, TikToks, Stories, carousels, and other branded content
  • Visit The Botanical Bar regularly to capture products, plant-care demonstrations, events, workshops, and behind-the-scenes moments
  • Write engaging captions and clear calls to action using the company's brand voice
  • Research relevant content trends and recommend ways to adapt them for The Botanical Bar's audience
  • Support campaigns promoting store visits, product launches, workshops, seasonal offers, and community events
  • Help develop educational plant-care content that customers can save and share
  • Assist with community engagement by drafting responses to appropriate comments and messages under supervision
  • Review social media insights and prepare a simple monthly performance report
  • Track key indicators such as reach, engagement, video views, website visits, inquiries, and offer redemptions
  • Participate in campaign brainstorming, weekly check-ins, and content review sessions
  • Complete a final campaign or portfolio project demonstrating skills developed during the internship

This role will focus primarily on creative and marketing projects. Administrative work will represent less than 25% of the intern's responsibilities.

Qualifications
We welcome students and emerging professionals who want to build practical experience in social media marketing, content creation, branding, and small-business strategy. Previous professional or management experience is not required.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Interest in social media marketing, communications, public relations, graphic design, photography, video production, entrepreneurship, or a related field
  • Familiarity with Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook
  • Creativity and an interest in visual storytelling
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to write clear, engaging, and audience-friendly captions
  • Willingness to learn photography, short-form video production, editing, and content planning
  • Basic familiarity with Canva or mobile video-editing tools is helpful, but training will be provided
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow brand guidelines
  • Dependability, organization, and openness to feedback
  • Ability to manage assignments and meet agreed-upon deadlines
  • Interest in plants, retail, lifestyle brands, community engagement, or small-business marketing is a plus
  • Ability to visit The Botanical Bar in downtown Indianapolis on designated content-capture days

The ideal candidate is curious, creative, dependable, and excited to develop a portfolio while learning how social media contributes to the growth of a local business.
