About Hemingway
Hemingway exists to support the people shaping the future of mental health.
We publish news, analysis and practical guides on mental health innovation, and run a community of more than 500 founders, clinicians, researchers, investors and operators from around the world.
Thousands of people read Hemingway every week, including many of the people building, funding and delivering new approaches to mental healthcare.
We’ve grown a lot in the last two years, and there are now more stories to write than I (Steve) have capacity for. These are stories about new research, new innovation and new ways businesses are succeeding in this space. We want to share these stories with the world and are looking for someone who shares this desire. If you care about mental health innovation, know lots about the space and are a great writer and researcher, this could be the perfect role for you.
What you'll do
- Support production of the weekly Hemingway roundup. Review all of the sources we collect each week, conduct your own research on what has happened that week across industry and research, prioritise the most important stories, fact-check them and create a concise synthesis for our readers. Turn this into email and social content versions.
- Research and write deep dives. Help develop Hemingway Guides and other longer pieces on the most important topics in global mental health. This includes speaking with founders, clinicians, investors, researchers and operators to understand topics properly and extract useful insights. You will also draft
You'll work directly with Steve on all content.
Who we're looking for
Frankly, this is not an easy project. You will be developing something from scratch that will require significant amounts of coordination, research and critical thinking. We are looking for someone who;
- Writes exceptionally well. You can make complicated things simple. Your writing is concise, clear and interesting. You don't use 500 words when 200 will do.
- Understands global mental healthcare. You already have meaningful context on global mental health, from a clinical, research and market perspective. You understand how major healthcare systems work (especially the US and the UK). You understand the main trends and know the key players in the mental health market.
- Is a great researcher. You know how to get beyond the obvious Google search, find good evidence, interrogate claims and work out what's actually true.
- Is commercially savvy. You know what matters in the mental health market, how payers, health systems, investors and founders think. You know what they care about and the problems they have.
- Can get insights from smart people. You're comfortable interviewing subject-matter experts, asking good follow-up questions and turning their knowledge into something useful for readers.
- Knows what’s important and what’s not. You can look at 50 things that happened this week and identify the five that our audience actually needs to know about.
- Is intellectually curious. You genuinely enjoy learning about unfamiliar subjects and going several levels deeper than everyone else.
- Is a finisher. You own and deliver ambitious projects end-to-end. You take initiative and drive the agenda. You make hard decisions when needed. You MUST have a demonstrated track record of publishing written content. You are capable of working to deadlines.
You might currently work in healthcare journalism, research, consulting, investing, a health-tech company or somewhere completely different. We're much more interested in how you think, research and write than having a particular job title.
Logistics
- Commitment: 2 days per week. There may be scope for the role to grow over time. You must be available every Monday from 10am–2pm UK time to help get the weekly roundup published.

- Start: As soon as practical.
- Compensation: Share your day rate with us in your application
