Pitch Writer

I’m thrilled to announce I’m The Margin's newest writer and editor - and I’m looking for pitches!

At The Margin, we’re operating in the sweet spot between money and culture, where high finance meets real life. It’s an intentionally broad beat – in our society, what isn’t touched by cash? – but one that’s full of possibilities. By way of example, we’ve already written about the true cost of Ozempic, match fixing in Canadian soccer, and the math behind Guinness's cultural resurgence. (Yes, even splitting the G can be related to finance).

I’m editing, too, and freelancers, that means I WANT YOUR PITCHES! There are financial stories everywhere for those with the eyes to see them, and I want your eyes. We’re looking for canny financial reporters capable of working with numbers who can also make an argument in a strong, smart, opinionated tone. This isn’t dry, neutral news writing: the world of cash is one with many viewpoints. Stake your claim, and defend it, even if not everybody agrees with you.

For topics, try to either find the story in the money, or the money in the story. In our world of guerilla influencer marketing, Polymarket bets, and meme stocks, there’s a financial side to every big cultural trend. The reverse is true as well: as abstract as they may seem, twitches in the financial markets have real effects on day-to-day life. 

For new writers, I’m looking to assign stories in the 900-1,200 word range. We generally pay $0.40 - $1.00 per word, with new writers starting at the lower end, and rates increasing for subsequent assignments with consideration of skill, expertise, and complexity.
