The role.

Tangle News is seeking a part-time contractual employee to join the editorial team in a remote role producing newsletter, podcast, and video content.

Tangle publishes a newsletter Monday through Friday and on Sunday, with a complementary podcast that also offers audio-exclusive interviews and conversations. Our YouTube channel publishes videos on a weekly cadence, featuring video podcasts, deep-dives on nuanced political issues, and news commentary. As a member of the team, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved with all three channels, as well as our efforts to connect Tangle to a wider audience.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting research for the daily newsletter.
    • Compiling and summarizing commentary from across the political spectrum on the topic of the day.
    • Assisting lead writers on research for deep-dive Friday editions.
    • Sharing fun and engaging content from the web for our Sunday edition.
  • Drafting sections of the newsletter.
    • Authoring drafts of our “Have a nice day” and “Under the radar” sections.
    • Contributing to other drafts of sections on a regular basis.
  • Editing.
    • Fact-checking all information in the newsletter and podcast to ensure it is accurate and up to date.
    • Providing copy edits to ensure high-quality writing.
  • Brainstorming and pitching Tangle guests.
    • Supporting the editorial staff in identifying interview subjects for our YouTube and podcast audience.
    • Coordinating guest bookings.
  • Managing events and awards.
    • Keeping the team organized and on deadline for award submissions and event opportunities.

The skills.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Experience editing and fact-checking large quantities of written work on a hard deadline.
  • Efficient research skills, with the ability to survey a wide range of news sources and distill relevant information.
  • Demonstrated ability to write engaging, informative copy for a news audience.
  • The ability to self-organize, particularly staying on top of deadlines and keeping others on deadline.
  • Experience in a newsroom or other writing endeavor.
  • Familiarity with the news media landscape, including prominent outlets, writers, and creators.
  • Consistency in completing designated tasks on a daily basis.
  • Curiosity to explore new topics and angles on complex issues.
  • Comfort debating ideas — and having your own ideas challenged.

The details.

This position is remote and will begin on Monday, March 2, with an expected time commitment of 25 hours per week. You must be available from 10:00 AM ET to 12:00 PM ET on weekdays, and availability for up to two hours of work on Sundays is preferred, but not required.

Compensation is competitive and based on qualifications and experience.
