Hi! I’m hiring a part-time Assistant Editor/Writer for Freelancing With Tim to work with me for 10-ish hours a month at $30/hour. It’ll be fun! I promise!

What is Freelancing With Tim, anyway?

FWT is a suite of educational resources for journalists to help them navigate the industry. We cover everything from the nitty-gritty of crafting a compelling story to high-level, actionable advice on building a sustainable career in journalism, all centered around a twice-weekly newsletter and biweekly(ish) skills workshops, with lots of other things sprinkled in throughout.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Edit two newsletters per week
  • Help brainstorm topics for stories (including weekly newsletters, multi-week themes, and large-scale projects), workshops, events, and anything else that seems cool
  • Pitch and write occasional newsletters
  • Assist with operations, including: growth and development planning and research; light fact-checking; building and maintaining a pub sked; tracking invoices and payments; working with sponsors; updating and maintaining past posts; and various other smaller things

You definitely have:

  • Strong experience in and knowledge of the freelance journalism world
  • Professional editing experience
  • Familiarity with the ~newsletter landscape~
  • No problem telling me I’m wrong or being dumb when I am
  • Ability to work flexible hours (read: not crazy hours, flexible hours. Like the occasional weekend or evening here and there but for real nothing crazy I promise)
  • A self-starter mentality. My editing philosophy has always been to equip people to shine then get out of the way, and that’s how I approach this
  • A chill, low-stress, easy-going outlook on work and life!

Not mandatory but it would be super cool if you also have some of this stuff:

  • Strong familiarity with AP style
  • Experience with Substack and/or beehiiv
  • Audience development and growth experience
  • Experience working with sponsors
  • A working knowledge of A.I. and have incorporated it into your own workflows and systems (I’m bad at this lol but would like to get better)

Odds and ends:

  • I don’t care when or where you work! Aside from hard deadlines, it doesn’t matter when you’re on
  • You should prob know your way around Google Docs/Sheets/Forms, Airtable, Substack/beehiiv, Eventbrite, Zoom, Slack, Stripe, and Raindrop, but those are way easy to learn so it doesn’t matter a ton if you’re unfamiliar
  • I want you to bring ideas! I’m really looking for a collaborator and partner here, so I’d love someone who wants to dive in and contribute
  • Most of what’s in this listing is flexible, but I’m also very invested in helping you do what you want to do, too!
