We’re hiring an Editor

  • Salary range: $105,000 – $140,000
  • Location: Remote (U.S. only)
  • Application deadline: January 19, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. CT

  • Direct Reports: None; may supervise reporters or fellows on short-term, temporary or interim basis
  • Travel requirements: Travel 1-2 times per year for in-person team activities

The 19th will be hiring two editors in this job application process, each with different areas of coverage:

  • child care, the economy, health and sports
  • climate, disability and aging, education, immigration, justice and national issues

The editor will work closely with editorial directors to assign, shape, edit and publish stories to fulfill The 19th’s mission of serving women and LGBTQ+ people with timely, high-quality and distinctive journalism across formats and platforms. This role is responsible for supporting editorial directors in implementing an audience-centered coverage strategy within a team of reporters and fellows by developing, editing and producing a range of stories, from quicker turns to longer-term coverage and special projects; from written articles to video scripts and newsletters. The editor will also be available to provide second edits on stories and edit copy from other departments.

As an example of a typical week, the editor may work with reporters and fellows to develop stories in coordination with their manager, conduct first and second edits on various story types, and collaborate with reporters and audience, visuals and planning teams to produce stories. They’ll work with their manager to make weekly and monthly plans for their team and help fill coverage gaps. The editor may fill in for editorial directors as needed, taking on tasks such as joining planning meetings and facilitating team meetings. This role will primarily work in tools like Google Workspace, Airtable, WordPress and Parsely.

Responsibilities

  • Support a team of reporters and fellows to center The 19th’s story standards and audience needs throughout our journalism every day
  • Help design and implement daily, weekly and monthly coverage plans for their team — leveraging audience insights and reporter expertise — in close partnership with their manager
  • Communicate story status, updates and plans with their team, editorial leadership and other stakeholders via designated tools and channels
  • Edit stories daily across types — such as dailies, features, investigations — and formats, such as articles, newsletters, video scripts; provide second edits or edits to copy from other departments
  • Prepare stories for publication in partnership with reporters and fellows, such as drafting headlines, recommending relevant social captions, or requesting visuals
  • Work with reporters and fellows to update beat maps, assign stories, develop ideas, diversify sourcing, center audience needs, approve pitches, shape and edit stories, leverage various formats, collaborate across beats in efforts to build a collective body of representative journalism
  • Monitor news daily to assign story ideas that connect gender to politics, policy and power while meeting The 19th’s story standards
  • Help ensure quality of the team’s journalism and that it aligns with legal and ethical policies, story standards, audience needs and brand voice
  • Contribute to executing and improving story publishing workflows with the editorial planning manager, editorial director of audience and editorial director of visuals
  • Partner with editorial leadership to experiment with emerging journalism formats to continue meeting audiences where they are
  • Fill in for their manager on team operations, such as planning weekly coverage, assigning stories to reporters and fellows, and facilitating team meetings as needed
  • Coordinate awards submissions for their team, in collaboration with all editors
  • Early morning, evening and weekend shifts may be needed, in accordance with significant news events

Non-essential functions (as capacity permits)

  • Participate in culture building and inclusive decision making, as well as bringing ideas to different parts of our work to help us improve as an organization, such as hiring and onboarding new staff members
  • Contribute to cross-team learning, leadership development and organizational planning
  • Participate in team, organizational and individual relationship building and professional development throughout the year
  • Other responsibilities as needed

Relevant skills and experience

  • 4+ years of experience editing and assigning stories in a newsroom
  • Demonstrated news judgment and ability to publish audience-centered stories across a range of story types and formats
  • Enthusiasm for thinking and working creatively and collaboratively with journalists to solve problems
  • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication, with demonstrated experience using digital tools to communicate and collaborate effectively across a remote newsroom
  • Experience using content management systems such as WordPress, calendar tools such as Airtable, and audience analytics tools such as Parsely

We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
