Membership Growth Lead · Contract, Freelance · 10 hours per week · Remote from anywhere

Omgosh, hi! Welcome! I'm so happy you're interested in this role. First step, if you're not already a GW subscriber, head on over and sign up for free at generalist.world (the welcome emails will give you the ~ vibe ~ of GW and will help you determine if this is the right-fit company for you).

Hi, I'm Milly, founder of Generalist World, a global community for people who are brilliant at many things, not just one. 65,000+ people read our newsletter every week, with hundreds of thousands more across LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok.

I'm looking for a Membership Growth Lead to own the growth of our paid membership: acquisition, conversion, retention, and the email systems, pipeline, and automation underneath it.

The rest of the team covers content, events, and community. You're the person who generates interest, turns it into paid members, and keeps that number growing month after month. If you know how to turn an audience into a membership, and you build the systems that make it repeatable, keep reading.

Right now I run the entire sales cycle fairly manually. It's been a fantastic way to get to know our people but there's no great system yet. Building one is the core objective of this role.

About Generalist World

Generalist World is the home for people who never fit in one box, who got told to "just pick a lane," and found their people with us instead. Alongside the newsletter we run a paid membership, a jobs board, and events around the world. We're a small, fast-moving, fully remote team of 4 that cares a great deal about the work we do and the people we help. You'd report directly to me.

What you'll own

You own everything from "someone discovers Generalist World" to "they've joined as a member." Our team runs the community once people are in, so you stay focused on filling the pipeline and converting best-fit people.

1. New members (the core of the role). Turn our 65,000 readers into paying members, month after month.

  • Work our warmest leads first: engaged readers, waitlists, event attendees, and people already in our orbit.
  • Run personalised, well-researched outreach across email, DM, and calls. Always human and on-brand (very important to me!)
  • Hold real conversations, surface fit, and close, while protecting who gets in.

2. The system (you build it, and then run it).

  • Own the pipeline: how we track who's interested, what stage they're at, and what happens next.
  • Build the email sequences and automations so growth doesn't live in one person's head.
  • Run experiments on messaging and offers. Double down on what works, drop what doesn't.

3. Protecting the community.

  • We're selective about who joins, and our pricing slides so people pay what they can. You grow the number without ever compromising either.

Your job isn't just to sell memberships. It's to build the most effective engine we've ever had for bringing the right-fit people into our world for generalists.

How you'll be supported from day one

You won't be starting from a blank page:

  • A warm audience. 65,000 newsletter readers, plus waitlists and inbound interest, to work from day one.
  • A membership people already love. Real members and testimonials to point to.
  • The playbook. I've run this by hand for years. You'll get my messaging, our pricing, and how we talk about GW.
  • The tools. Paid access to whatever you need to do the job well.

What good looks like (first 90 days)

  • Month 1: learn our audience, our members, and how we sell GW. Start working warm leads.
  • Month 2: a repeatable pipeline and follow-up system is live, and members are coming in through it.
  • Month 3: membership is growing month on month, and you can show exactly why.

You're a great fit if

  • You have PERSONALITY! And this shines through in your communication, emails, Slack messages, LinkedIn posts.
  • You're a kind, positive-sum human who is ambitious and can have a laugh at themselves too.
  • You've grown a paid membership before (a community, a newsletter, a course, a cohort, a paid group, any flavour), and you can show the numbers.
  • You build systems (email sequences, a CRM or pipeline, automations in tools like Notion, Zapier, or beehiiv).
  • You understand how online communities and creator audiences actually work (Slack, Discord, Circle, membership businesses, newsletter audiences). This isn't corporate B2B sales.
  • You win by building relationships, not by pressure or volume.
  • You run independently. You don't need a manager setting your weekly targets.
  • You write like a human. Your emails read like a person, not a template.
  • You'd rather lose a sale than let the wrong-fit person in.
  • You use AI in your real workflow (researching leads, drafting outreach, summarising calls), not just in theory.
  • You like running creative, odd, weird experiments. Because we do too!

Bonus points:

  • You're actively building a personal brand.
  • You've sold a lifetime or high-ticket membership before.
  • You've grown a newsletter or an audience to paid.
  • Worked in or with a creator-led media business before.
  • You've built go-to-market systems in Notion, Zapier, or beehiiv.
  • You're already a Generalist World fan!

Extra big pluses (this role could also grow into a bigger sales role):

  • Experience selling newsletter, podcast, or creator media ads
  • Familiarity with our sponsor categories (productivity tools, career growth, AI tools)

This isn't for you if

  • You need a full-time salary right now
  • You need someone to micro-manage you
  • You don't think in systems and repeatable processes
  • You're not a peoples-people. You'll be one of the faces of GW and being comfortable building genuine rapport with people is key.
  • You don't believe in the generalist movement

What you'll get

  • A monthly retainer plus uncapped commission on every member you bring in.
  • You'll learn how all of this works directly from me.
  • A lot of agency and trust (this is how the whole GW team operates so well remotely).
  • Fully remote, flexible hours, work from anywhere.

Details

  • Location: fully remote, work from anywhere.
  • Commitment: part-time contract to start (10 hours a week), with a path to grow as membership grows.
  • Compensation: $1500/month retainer plus $100 per new member you bring in, uncapped.
  • Start date: as soon as we find the right person.
  • Applications: open 21st August and close September 1st.

How to apply

I don't really care about your CV tbh, I care about who you are as a person. Email [click apply] with a short note answering:

  • Three things you'd do first to grow our membership, and why. You've got a warm list of 65,000 and 800 members. Where would you start, and what would you leave alone? I care how you think, not how polished the plan is.
  • One type of person you'd turn away, even if they could pay, and why. This tells me whether you understand the GW culture and what we protect.
  • A system you built that made something repeatable. A sequence, a process, an automation, anything that turned a one-off win into something that kept working. Roughly what it was, and what it did.

Anything else you want me to know? Why you're an amazing fit, a GW story, a number you're proud of, a short Loom introducing yourself? I'd love to see it.

I read every application myself. If there's a fit, we'll have a call, then a short paid trial so we both see how it feels in practice. If it's not a fit, I'll let you know directly.

So excited to find the right person! — Milly
