The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) at UC Berkeley is launching a new media fellowship supporting high-quality reporting on bridging and belonging in Colorado.
Journalism has the power to deepen understanding and foster more constructive relationships across differences.
This fellowship is designed to help journalists report in ways that reveal people’s values and lived experiences, identify shared concerns even when communities disagree about solutions, and move beyond documenting conflict to helping people better understand one another.
Grants will support stories that help audiences understand how people and communities navigate differences, build trust, and work toward shared solutions. We are especially interested in reporting that moves beyond conflict and problem framing to offer a fuller picture—one that illuminates commonalities, clarifies what is at stake, and explores how people can make progress on shared goals, even amid differences or disagreement.
We will award up to 15 one-year grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, for a total of up to $150,000, to Colorado-based content producers working across a range of media, including radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, websites, podcasts, and social media. Fellows will join a community of practice which begins with an in-person convening.
Over the course of the fellowship, fellows will meet regularly to share updates on their projects and receive input from one another, GGSC staff, and other experts and consultants. Shortly after the grant period ends, we will reconvene the cohort to present their final pieces and reflect on lessons from their reporting that could inform the work of other journalists.
