Are you a driven writer who would like to directly shape and inspire a thriving future for everyone?The Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory® at Arizona State University is charting a course for global habitability and increased well-being and we need someone to help share that story.

The Global Futures Laboratory is looking for a Managing Editor with strong editorial instincts and a strategic mindset to shape and steward stories that bring our work to life. From breakthrough research to everyday impact, you’ll help surface and share content that connects the lab’s discoveries, people and programs to audiences who care deeply about the future of our planet—and our ability to thrive on it.

You will craft stories and narratives and collaborate on regularly cadenced publications that are specifically created for a regular print and digital multi-media communications channels, including ASU News, the biannual journal Futurecast and the monthly digital newsletter Global Futures Now. Additionally, you will work closely with a team of writers, designers, marketers, videographers and photographers to produce high-quality, creative and engaging materials that target our audiences that range from students to alumni to faculty and staff to donors and the public at large.

As the ideal candidate, you will be an organized, strategic and motivated doer with the vision to advance the strategic goals of the Global Futures Laboratory, successfully managing multiple assignments and tasks at once with quality and with speed. You should have at least five years of experience managing and executing writing-based projects and/or prior experience working with clients in an agency-like setting. Working with multiple teams and units across the university, you will bring excellent collaboration skills to help create strategic marketing plans. Excellent writing and organizational skills and a positive team attitude is a must.

This is a full-time, in-person role based in the Walton Center for Planetary Health building, focused on elevating Global Futures Laboratory’s marketing and communications. You’ll be part of a broader Knowledge Enterprise network, but your day-to-day is about shaping and sharing the stories that move GFL’s mission forward—working closely with teams across the lab to make it happen

Essential Duties:

  • Working with GFL marcomm, act as lead story writer, researching, planning, developing and writing editorial and marketing material content for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Manage editorial projects from concept to completion, including the biannual journal Futurecast.
  • Support content development across GFL’s social media channels, working with internal partners and collaborators across GFL, Knowledge Enterprise and broader ASU network. Help manage the editorial calendar and shape social content that’s timely, consistent and audience-aware.
  • Contribute to GFL strategic communications planning by participating in brainstorms, editorial syncs and integrated marketing discussions — bringing fresh ideas, sharp instincts and a deep understanding of what resonates with GFL’s audiences.
  • Conduct background research and interview faculty, students, project leads and other stakeholders to get necessary information.
  • Edit and proofread content for clarity, accuracy and ASU style.
  • Stay abreast of ASU news and external news related to Global Futures focus areas, as well as trends and best practices in communications and marketing especially social media.
  • Collaborate with partners and colleagues across the university on materials that help amplify the work, mission and vision of the Global Futures Laboratory. This includes several ASU teams such as Media Relations, Brand Team, Events and more.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills, including knowledge of AP style.
  • Knowledge of best practices of ethical journalism, public relations, communication and marketing methods and techniques.
  • Evidence of meticulous editing and proofreading skills.
  • Experience interviewing experts to glean key information.
  • Demonstrated ability to convey complex information clearly, concisely and accurately to a lay audience.
  • Comfort with or demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience in working collaboratively on a team and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Understanding of design and creative communication styles as elements of storytelling and narrative development.
  • Skill in leadership, collaboration and team-building.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, staff, teams and community members.
  • Curiosity is a must.
  • Experience with project management including familiarity with cloud-based or application-based project management software and/or platforms.
  • Comfort working with digital writing applications and software.
  • Photography skills are a plus.

Working Environment:

This purpose-driven position is in an open-office environment. Team members are expected to work in-person during weekdays. Our team-friendly atmosphere is within a beautiful new complex that includes offices, laboratories, classrooms and event spaces.

  • Standard Working Environment:
    • Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position.
    • Regular use of a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as a calculator, copy machine and printer.
    • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties.
    • Expected to be responsive to customers; engaged in work production; and resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.

Department Statement:

This position is part of the larger Knowledge Enterprise Strategic Marketing and Communications team. It is part of a small satellite group at the Walton Center for Planetary Health on the Tempe Campus. We support marketing and communication at the Global Futures Laboratory, the world’s first comprehensive laboratory dedicated to the empowerment of our planet and its systems. It is built upon the expertise of more than 950 scientists and scholars, and an ability to leverage knowledge from a global network of partners to address the pressing challenges that threaten not only environmental systems, but also the human and societal systems that depend on them.

From this foundation, the Global Futures Laboratory anticipates and responds to existing and emerging challenges and employs innovation to help shape and inform our future so all of Earth’s inhabitants may thrive.
