I’ve settled into my role as Head of Editorial at Junkee Media after a couple of months and now, the time has come. I’m looking for freelancers across both Junkee and Punkee mastheads with assignments beginning in April.
You don’t need to be an experienced writer, but you do need to come to me with a fleshed-out pitch. What that looks like is 3-4 pars answering these questions: Why this, why now, why junkee or punkee (edit: we are Australian so need to cater to an Aussie audience), who you’ll speak to (if required), and a loose structure. On each brand specifically, this is what I’m looking for:
Punkee
First-person, reported or opinion pieces on lifestyle (fashion, beauty, mental health, home + decor) from an identity perspective, with the data to back it up where needed. Punkee is how we perceive and understand ourselves, so that personal pov is essential.
Junkee
Meaty reported pieces (that’s multiple sources/experts and weaving a narrative together) or zeitgeisty analysis (with evidence!) within the social justice/news/political space and through an Australian lens, but will consider the occasional pop culture (music, film, tv, gaming) pitch.
What I’m not looking for:
Also important to consider how this might be packaged for social. We pride ourselves on meeting our (very discerning) gen z audiences where they are, so understanding how your story would be adapted for our feeds is essential. Rates negotiable depending on the work required, but let it be known that it’s important to me that writers are paid decently.
If all that sounds great, come introduce yourself (please for the love of god get my name right) at [click apply] with "pitch: [insert your idea]" in the subject and share examples of your work if you've got em✌
