Freelance Website Content Editor – Migration and UX focus
We’re looking for a freelance content editor to help us migrate and elevate our website content as part of a major rebuild project. If you’re a detail-driven editor with a passion for user experience and purpose-led content, we’d love to hear from you.
Rate: £250/day
Schedule: 3 days per week
Duration: 6 months
Location: Flexible, with the option of using our Bristol office
About us
The Soil Association is the innovative food and nature charity that develops practical food, farming and forestry solutions to restore nature and ensure good food for all. About the role We are currently undertaking a website rebuild project, led by our Digital team. This project offers a golden opportunity to rationalise and improve our website content, improving our user experience, and making it easier for people to understand and engage with our cause.
We are looking for a skilled and energetic content professional to join the team and support this large-scale content migration, from our existing CMS (Umbraco) to a newer version of Umbraco. You will play a key role in this migration, writing and editing content to high editorial and design standards.
Your responsibilities will include proofreading, restructuring copy, correcting formatting, ensuring a consistent style and tone of voice, adding metadata, and building pages to match wireframes.
You will work as part of a small content team, reporting to our Website Content Editor.
You will collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts to write, edit and signoff content, and support our content-owning teams to uphold quality standards. You may also rewrite some high value, priority content. You will build content in our new Umbraco CMS, inputting content into new components, ensuring these are formatted correctly and consistently. You will size and save images and documents to agreed standards. You may also support in creating templates.
Key responsibilities
Write, restructure and edit web content to agreed quality standards
Build and format pages in line with wireframes and content design principles
Proofread for spelling, grammar and formatting accuracy
Ensure consistent style, tone of voice and brand alignment across all pages
Complete and optimise metadata for SEO and accessibility
Collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts to review and sign off content
Work in the Umbraco platforms and potentially in an interim solution (e.g. Easy Content)
Build content workflows and templates
Track and report on migration progress, ensuring we keep to project timelines Essential skills & experience
Strong understanding of best practice content design, accessibility (including WCAG 2.2) and SEO principles
Proven experience in content design, including writing, editing and structuring content for websites
Skilled at working with content management systems (preferably Umbraco)
Excellent attention to detail and editorial accuracy
Ability to apply brand guidelines and tone of voice consistently
Experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts, with the ability to manage diƯering views diplomatically
Ability to work to agreed timelines, and take a pragmatic mindset, balancing quality with efficiency to maintain project progress
Experience creating accessible content, including screen-reader compatibility, alt text and heading structures
Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
Familiarity with project management and productivity tools such as Trello, Jira and Teams
Understanding of best practice in content design for mobile Desirable
Experience working with a charity or not for profit organisation
Familiarity with content migration processes
Experience working in agile or iterative project environments
Familiarity with HTML / CSS basics to fix formatting or troubleshoot
Knowledge or interest in food, farming and nature
