URL Media is a network of news & information outlets who serve Black and Brown communities. URL, which shares content and revenues, stands for Uplift, Respect and Love and these are actions we pledge to our audiences, our vendors, our partners, ourselves and, all importantly, our staff.

Role: Freelance Writer, URWealth (Contract)

Location: Remote; anywhere in the U.S.

Pay Range: $3,000/month

Responsibilities

Through the lens of Uplift. Respect. Love. — the freelance writer will write about generational wealth-building and money management for our URWealth vertical (website, newsletter and occasionally video), focusing on stories that impact and resonate with BIPOC communities. One week you may write a Q&A on personal finance choices; the next you may write an opinion piece on the unique challenges of BIPOC entrepreneurs.  

Duties will include:

• Report and write two (2) engaging, well-sourced stories per month on wealth, luxury lifestyle, investing, real estate, travel, and personal finance tailored to an affluent audience of color
• Appear comfortably and confidently on camera for social media videos, Reels, TikToks, and digital segments at least once weekly — be able to explain complex financial or lifestyle topics in an approachable, engaging way
• Bring cultural fluency and authentic perspective to coverage — understanding how race, identity, and generational wealth intersect with financial decision-making and luxury consumption
• Develop and maintain a strong roster of sources including wealth managers, real estate brokers, travel advisors, entrepreneurs, and high-net-worth individuals from diverse communities
• Identify and pitch original story ideas that reflect the aspirations, challenges, and lived experiences of wealthy and upwardly mobile people of color — going beyond mainstream personal finance coverage
• Produce content across formats including longform features, quick-hit news items, service journalism (e.g. “how to” and “best of” pieces), and Q&As with entrepreneurs and tastemakers
• Write with authority on topics such as portfolio diversification, alternative investments, luxury real estate markets, second-home ownership, private travel, and high-end consumer trends
• Monitor competitors, mainstream financial media, and luxury lifestyle publications to identify gaps in coverage and opportunities for differentiated storytelling
• Meet deadlines consistently in a fast-moving digital newsroom while maintaining high standards for accuracy and sourcing

What We’re Looking For

• At least 5 years as a journalist or writer covering business, finance, wealth, travel or lifestyle; reporting or commentary background a plus
• An appetite for pitching and coming up with story ideas–particularly those at the intersection of wealth-building and diverse communities. 
• Mastery of AP style
• A collaborative mindset
