Fiction Editor, Doubleback Books
Deadline: August 15, 2026

Doubleback Books is seeking a new Fiction Editor. Doubleback Books, an imprint of Sundress Publications, revives works that were previously published by small independent presses that closed during the twenty-first century, helping bring out-of-print books and collections back to readers.

The Fiction Editor reads prose manuscripts annually and selects titles for publication. The Fiction Editor works with authors on edits, cover selection, and formatting the book. On average, Doubleback Books publishes one fiction title annually.

Key responsibilities:

  • Reading and evaluating prose manuscripts during the annual reading period
  • Helping select fiction titles for publication
  • Communicating with the Managing Editor and editorial staff about submissions
  • Working directly with authors on edits and revisions
  • Assisting with cover selection and book formatting
  • Supporting the publication process from manuscript selection through launch
  • Helping uphold Doubleback Books’ mission of reviving out-of-print works from independent presses

Required qualifications for this role include:

  • Editorial experience, especially with fiction or prose manuscripts
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of contemporary fiction and independent publishing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with authors and editorial staff

This is a remote, volunteer position with seasonal responsibilities tied primarily to the annual reading and publication cycle. Doubleback Books believes that diversity enriches the human experience and improves the quality of the work we publish. We encourage individuals of color, transgender and non-binary individuals, individuals with disabilities, and members of other underrepresented communities to apply.

Doubleback Books is part of Sundress Publications, a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit literary press collective founded in 2000 that publishes chapbooks and full-length collections in both print and digital formats, and hosts numerous literary journals, an online reading series, and the Best of the Net Anthology. The entire Sundress Publications collective is staffed by passionate volunteers, so this position, like all others at the press, is currently unpaid.

To apply, please send a CV and cover letter by August 15, 2026, detailing your interest in the position to our Hiring Manager, Katie Collins, at sundresshiringmanager@gmail.com.
