Job Title: Editorial Operations Manager

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief & CEO
Location: Remote, U.S. based

Position: Full-time (40 hrs/week)

Your Local Epidemiologist is hiring an Editorial Operations Manager to support our growing family of newsletters. This role will oversee the daily operations of YLE’s newsletters, while also ensuring coordination with our other programs and platforms.  You will help steward the quality of our work and ensure we consistently deliver on our promise to provide nuance and evidence to inform the decisions people make when facing complex public health issues.

Your Local Epidemiologist (YLE) is a people-powered platform redefining public health. We equip people to make evidence-based decisions — despite the noise — on a wide range of public health issues, from COVID-19 to reproductive care to seed oils. We publish a range of national and state newsletters, as well as guides, resources, explainers, and in-depth reports on timely issues.

You will oversee the day-to-day editorial workflow, ensuring that content moves efficiently from idea to publication while maintaining clarity, consistency, and brand integrity. You'll also work closely with the community engagement manager to ensure that YLE content is responding to real-world health concerns and informed by community questions. You should have a deep appreciation for the brand, a strong grasp of editorial operations, and a commitment to enabling excellent work across the team. You will serve as the main point of coordination across writers, editors, freelancers, and partners.

We regularly collaborate with other science communicators and public health advocates from diverse backgrounds who reach different audiences. A desire to build relationships and find common ground — while protecting our evidence-based, empathetic approach to science communication — is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the editorial team
  • Plan and manage editorial calendars across newsletters, reports, and digital content
  • Manage Trello workflow
  • Assign tasks to writers and editors
  • Proactively plan with our contributors to ensure that deadlines are met
  • Prepare and manage the editorial budget, including overseeing freelance contracts
  • Coordinate with our community insights team to integrate survey feedback, reader questions, and other inputs into editorial planning
  • Develop and implement editorial policies and procedures to ensure all published content meets high editorial standards and brand guidelines
  • Provide leadership and operational support for other areas of editorial process innovation, from improving data workflows to reader engagement
  • Facilitate regular team meetings to discuss progress and strategies
  • Evaluate and adopt new tools and technologies for content management
  • With support of company leadership, develop and execute plans to grow audiences, deepen reader satisfaction and drive subscriber retention
  • Ensure the editorial team adheres to deadlines and solves roadblocks
  • Coordinate cross-functional projects and partnerships that involve editorial deliverables

Requirements

  • Deep experience in running operations, preferably in the media industry
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational systems
  • Ability to work autonomously, from identifying tasks to taking them across the finish line
  • People management experience
  • Strong project management skills and comfort with editorial/publishing tools
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Familiarity with digital publishing best practices, including SEO
  • A collaborative, low-ego approach and a commitment to mission-driven work
  • An enthusiasm for building something new
  • Experience with science, public health, or policy content is a plus
