Editorial Associate

As Skylight continues to grow, we are hiring once again! We're looking for an Editorial Associate to help develop and produce original journalism about New York City's clean energy transition in apartment buildings. This is a hands-on editorial role, working through the full cycle of story research, commissioning, editing, fact-checking, copy-editing, and publication.

This is a great opportunity for an early-career journalist looking to get onto an editing track, and/or anyone interested in reporting on climate, tech, urbanism and cities. This role works directly with me, so feel free to direct any questions my way (camille@skylight.nyc).

About the Role

The Editorial Associate will work closely with Skylight's Managing Editor to help develop and produce journalism about New York City's clean energy transition in apartment buildings. This is a hands-on editorial role, working through the full cycle of story research, commissioning, editing, fact-checking, copy-editing, and publication. Working in our fast-paced, start-up environment, success in this role requires curiosity, resourcefulness and willingness to dig into the topics of real estate, clean energy building systems, architecture, and emerging technologies. You will work with Skylight editors and freelance reporters, helping turn promising ideas into strong stories for our highly engaged audience. This is a part-time position of 10-12 hours per week, with roughly two hours per week in person. This role is well suited to an experienced journalist who wants to contribute meaningfully to a growing publication while working on a flexible, mostly remote schedule.

Responsibilities

• Contribute ideas and reporting that help Skylight identify timely stories and better serve its audience
• Monitor developments in New York City's clean energy transition and identify emerging trends, news, and story opportunities
• Conduct pre-reporting on potential stories, including identifying, researching, and pursuing leads with sources
• Identify and connect qualified freelance writers with relevant sources to help launch reporting
• Think creatively about how Skylight can make complex topics useful and accessible to readers, including through guides, FAQs, diagrams, maps, timelines, and other editorial formats
• Occasionally help with fact-checking articles, verifying claims, quotes, names, data, and sourcing
• Copy-edit stories for clarity, accuracy, grammar, structure, and adherence to Skylight style
• Research and source photographs, graphics, and other visual elements for stories; occasionally take original photographs

Requirements

• 2-5 years of experience in journalism, media, or a related editorial field
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
• Strong writing and copy-editing skills, with a solid grasp of grammar, style, and AP style
• Experience fact-checking articles or conducting accuracy reviews
• Basic photography skills and comfort taking original photos for stories, a plus
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple stories/deadlines simultaneously
• Strong commitment to accuracy and details
• Familiarity with digital publishing platforms and CMS tools (e.g., WordPress) is a plus
• A passion for sustainability, clean energy, urbanism, and housing-related topics

Compensation

The expected compensation is $45/hour. We are committed to full, fair compensation, and this is not the cap for a career at Skylight. We will review applications on a rolling basis. Application Deadline: October 12, 2026.
