Wanted: Part-time community partner to grow The Midst

View image

I’m looking for a thoughtful community partner — 3 action-packed hours a week, remote, contract — to help me show up well for members of The Midst Founder network and for the readers who keep our Substack Notes and comments alive.

Requirements
👉 You are a friendly womyn who is at least 39 years old. You are happy to work remotely and are as talented at collaboration as you are managing yourself.

👉 You are “content tech-savvy”. We have two primary properties: the-midst.com (built on WordPress) and The Midst Substack. You must know how to use Substack, WordPress (with the newish Blocks system), and Canva.

👉 You are an avid reader of Substack in general or at least somewhat active in managing your own Substack. The main thing here is that you enjoy reading and engaging in conversation on Substack Notes, email, Instagram comments, etc. You don’t have to be the best writer in the world, but you appreciate a good story when you see one.

If this sounds like you, I invite you to apply. Read more here:

Hi there!

After several years of running The Midst by myself, then with a small team (while working a full-time job in tech), then pivoting to be a one-woman shop + contributing writers, I’m excited to hire someone to help me nurture what I care about most: The Midst community‌.

I’m looking for a thoughtful part-time community partner — 3 action-packed hours a week, remote, contract — to help me and The Midst brand show up well for members of The Midst Founder network and for the readers who keep our Substack Notes and comments alive.

Requirements

  • You are a friendly, ambitious, results-oriented womyn who is at least 39 years old. You are happy to work remotely and are as talented at collaboration as you are managing yourself.
  • You are “content tech-savvy”. We have two primary properties: the-midst.com (built on WordPress) and The Midst Substack. You must know how to use WordPress (with the newish Blocks system) and Canva.

I can provide a written guide for WordPress, but I won’t have time to continually teach you how to use WordPress or the difference between a title, H2, and a meta description, etc. I will expect you to proofread your work and make sure you complete a checklist of requirements for publishing a blog post on the-midst.com. I won’t have time to check your work every time you post, but I will do a monthly check to make sure the content is performing in search engines (hence the checklist).
  • You are an avid reader of Substack in general (not just The Midst Substack) or at least somewhat active in managing your own Substack. The main thing here is that you enjoy reading and engaging in conversation on Substack Notes, email, Instagram comments, etc. You don’t have to be the best writer in the world, but you appreciate a good story when you see one.

Ideally:

  • You love building audiences and adore the magic of microcommunities (meaning, not huge but highly engaged).
  • You’re a thoughtful curator. This job is less about creating net-new content and more about leveraging and resurfacing the hundreds of stories we’ve already published.
  • You understand that people tend to have short attention spans and that you need a good headline and a compelling image to capture attention.
  • You enjoy promoting women’s businesses, thought leadership, and creative projects. You think of yourself as an agent of change and you enjoy building. You are comfortable in a bootstrap startup environment and communicating on Slack and the occasional Zoom meeting.
  • You live in North America and can meet occasionally on Zoom during general U.S. business hours or early evenings. I’m in MST, but you don’t have to be in MST — PST, CST, or ET works well.
  • You already read The Midst. You know the voice — we’re a collective of multiple voices representing the modern midlife experience. You can tell the difference between a Substack post that lands and one that’s trying too hard. You don’t need me to teach you about the audience because you are the audience. :)
  • You will capture the questions, themes, and reader responses that should turn into future Substack posts, conversations, or live events.

What you’d be doing right away

  • Reading Substack publications, discovering new ones, and commenting on them. We subscribe to hundreds of them and want to keep up with our community’s best posts and events, etc. You will help promote our community members’ content, workshops, offers, books, etc. on The Midst Substack as well as Substack Notes, Instagram, and The Midst Linkedin.
  • Publishing stories about The Midst Founder network on the-midst.com and The Midst Substack. See examples here and here.
  • Posting Notes regularly — sometimes drafting from scratch, sometimes adapting a paragraph from a recent Substack post into a standalone Note that travels. Sometimes restacking other people’s posts.
  • Flagging comments and DMs that need me personally, so I can respond instead of letting them sit.

How the job might grow over time

This is not guaranteed, but a vision that I’d like to actualize. My goal is to continue growing The Midst at a healthy, sustainable rate. If you help The Midst grow, we may be able to increase your hours and your scope of work. In the future, this position might include things like:

  • Moderating a new Slack channel or The Midst Substack
  • Co-producing editions of The Midst Substack
  • Communication with members of The Midst Founder network

Logistics

  • Hours: ~3 hours/week to start — set your own schedule as long as the work happens consistently and you can support (read: promote) our publishing schedule of two to three Substacks per week. I’ll provide you with expectations and goals for growth. If you need to take time off, you can, but I won’t be able to pay you for work you didn’t do.
  • Pay: $40 U.S. per hour ($600 per month), paid monthly, 1099 contractor
  • Tools: your own computer and internet. I’ll set you up with access to The Midst Substack, and the Founder network
  • Start: likely in June 2026
  • Trial: the first month is a paid trial for both of us. If we’re not a fit, no hard feelings either way.

How to apply

Please email me at [click apply] and include:

  • A short note about why this role, why The Midst, why now in your life.
  • A resume and/or link to your Linkedin profile, Substack publication, social media, or portfolio. Basically, whatever best highlights your skills and experience.

Friendly FYI: I’m reading every application personally while also running the-midst.com, The Midst Substack, The Midst Mastermind, client work, and other projects. I also have twins in sixth grade (in other words, I have a lot going on, so please don’t take it personally if I don’t respond right away). I’ll do my best to respond to all applicants within three weeks of receiving your application.

With much gratitude,

Amy
