Community marketer. The European Correspondent

Look after the readers we already have and turn more of them into supporters of independent journalism.

Location: Remote, anywhere in Europe. Type: Freelance, 4 days/week. Reports to: Head of marketing. Starting date: as soon as possible.

The European Correspondent is a non-profit European media organisation. We bring Europe's most relevant stories to around 80,000 citizens from all over the continent to build a European public discourse.

About the role

You'll work closely with our Head of marketing on everything that happens after sign-up: keeping subscribers engaged with what we publish, turning them into donors, and building lasting support. You run our email campaigns, donor conversations, and retention work.

What you'll be doing

  • Run our email campaigns to different subscriber and donor groups: fundraising, retention, reactivation.
  • Talk to donors directly: call donors for feedback and to build stronger relationships.
  • Run our donor retention work: reduce churn, grow recurring support, learn what makes our donors stay.
  • Own the donor-side metrics: churn rate and LTV. Set up and maintain the tracking, run experiments, share weekly findings with the Head of marketing.

What we’re looking for

  • A minimum of two years of marketing experience, ideally in media, subscriptions, fundraising, or non-profits, but we'll happily consider strong candidates from e-commerce, SaaS, or other industries.
  • Email marketing experience: segmentation, automation, A/B testing, using tools like Mailchimp, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign or analogues.
  • Hands-on experience with donor tooling: Donorbox, Stripe, PayPal or analogues.
  • Background in sales, hospitality, or customer support – a role where you've handled real conversations with strangers and turned them into customers.
  • You're comfortable on the phone or video with strangers.
  • You can write. You write clearly and you know basic direct-response copywriting frameworks like AIDA or PAS.
  • You're comfortable with numbers. You read dashboards, run experiments, and understand the difference between key and vanity metrics.
  • You're independent. You'll own your work without daily check-ins.
  • You're a registered freelancer in an EU country or Ukraine.
  • Excellent English.

Bonus points for

  • Speaking one of the six other languages we publish in (German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Ukrainian) is an advantage.
  • Background in subscription, membership, or recurring donor work.
  • A genuine interest in journalism, democracy, and Europe.

What we offer

  • Payment range: up to €2,500, depending on experience and location.
  • Flexible, remote-first work culture based on trust and outcomes.
  • A say in shaping an independent media start-up from the ground up.
  • Significant potential to grow with the organisation as we expand fast.
  • Access to a growing European network of journalists and content creators.
  • A mission-driven team that values openness and experimentation.
  • Location: if you're in Brussels, join us in our office, or work fully remotely from elsewhere.
