but cute | Character IP Company | Los Angeles, CA (Remote OK)

Compensation: $22-30/hr depending on experience | ~20-25 hrs/week

About but cute

but cute is a character IP company building a universe called Quirklandia, where every character is a mashup of a living thing and something unexpected. Think: an anxious moon bunny, a grumpy croissant crab, a chunky dragonfruit dragon. We started with premium plush toys and are now building across new categories.

We have revenue, inventory, customers who love what we're building, and a community that's been waiting for us to show up more consistently. That's where you come in.

The Role

You would be the person who makes our community feel alive every single day. Not in a "post and ghost" way. In a "people actually look forward to opening Discord because something fun is happening" way.

This is not a social media scheduling role. This is a relationship-building role that happens to live on social platforms.

What You'd Actually Do

Community building (this is the core)

  • Run and grow our Discord server and Facebook group daily. Start conversations, respond to members, run events, surface what people are talking about to the team
  • Grow Discord from ~300 members to 500 with real engagement (not just headcount)
  • Identify and nurture our most passionate community members into leadership roles and loud advocates
  • Experiment with what works: polls, character lore drops, behind-the-scenes content, AMAs with the founder, giveaways, whatever gets people talking

Social Engagement

  • Actively engage on Instagram, TikTok, Threads, Reddit, and Facebook on behalf of but cute. This means commenting, replying, DM-ing, joining conversations in relevant communities (plush collectors, mental health, parenting, Gen Z lifestyle)
  • You're not just managing our accounts. You're out there finding and connecting with people who should know about but cute but don't yet
  • Help build a Facebook community alongside Discord

Insights and Reporting

  • Track what's resonating and what's not. Surface community sentiment, recurring feedback, content ideas, and engagement trends to the team weekly

Fan Communication

  • Draft and post community updates, event announcements, and respond to questions
  • Own the voice of but cute in community spaces (playful, warm, a little irreverent, never corporate)

What We're Looking For

  • Someone who genuinely enjoys being in online communities, not just managing them. You probably already moderate a Discord server or run a group chat that people love
  • Strong written voice that can match but cute's tone: playful, warm, real. Never try-hard, never generic
  • You've managed or grown a community before (brand, creator, fandom, gaming, whatever). Show us the receipts
  • Comfortable across Discord, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Reddit, and Threads. You don't need to be an expert on all of them, but you should be fluent
  • Self-starter energy. We're a tiny team. You won't get a 15-step onboarding manual. You'll get context, goals, and trust
  • Bonus: You know the plush toy, collectibles, or character IP space. Or you're just someone who gets why an anxious moon bunny resonates with people

What We're Not Looking For

  • Someone who thinks community management means scheduling posts
  • Someone who needs to be told what to do every day
  • Someone who writes like a brand playbook instead of a human

Details

  • Part-time: ~20-25 hours per week
  • Remote (US based)
  • $22-30/hr depending on experience
  • Start date: ASAP (targeting mid-April)
  • Reports to: Mikey Schumacher, Founder

How to Apply

Send an email to [click apply] with:

1. A short note on why this role interests you (keep it real, skip the cover letter template)

2. An example of a community you've built, managed, or been a meaningful part of

3. Your Discord handle (if you have one)

4. Links to any relevant social accounts or portfolios

No formal resume required, but feel free to include one if you want.
