We're hiring an Associate Writer.
Do you notice clever taglines, or want to figure out why a social media ad made you stop scrolling? Can you write 500 words without breaking a sweat, but whittle that down to 50 when necessary? Would you defend the Oxford comma's honor with your life?
We're looking for a writer who's curious about how brands tell their stories, treats AI as a useful tool (but understands it's no replacement for taste and discernment), and knows what words [should go here].
At Rare Bird, our Associate Writer will work across a full client roster to write website copy, blog posts, email, social, video scripts, proposals, and anything else made of words. You'll turn discovery conversations into working drafts, take feedback and make the work better, and begin to build fluency in the tools that surround great writing, including SEO/AEO, content strategy, and analytics.
What you need to apply:
- Bachelor's in English, communications, marketing, or related field
- Demonstrable experience with professional writing and/or marketing (agency experience a plus)
- Writing samples that show range across different formats and voices
- Command of grammar, structure, and your own deadlines
- Comfort taking direction and delivering clean drafts without heavy oversight
If this sounds like you—or like someone you know—we'd love to hear more.
Job Responsibilities
At Rare Bird, the Associate Writer collaborates with a team of other creative professionals to implement campaigns that capture people's attention and build lasting connections.
-
Content development: Draft website copy, blog posts, emails, video scripts, social content, proposals, and anything else made of words for Rare Bird and our client roster, adjusting voice, style, tone, and format as needed.
-
Client collaboration: Participate in client calls and discovery meetings, ask questions that go beyond the surface, and turn what you hear into a working draft that reflects the client's brand voice and mission.
-
Revision: Take feedback from teammates and clients and use it to make a cleaner, better draft by tightening the prose, fixing the structure, or rethinking your entire approach if that's what the draft needs.
-
Quality control: Catch errors in our work before it goes out the door, from typos and broken links to facts that need verifying before a client (or one of their customers) sees them.
-
Time management: Manage multiple clients, projects, and deadlines at once, and know which ones need to move first when everything feels urgent.
-
Professional development: Build fluency in the tools and disciplines around the writing itself—SEO/AEO best practices, AI-assisted research, content management systems, and basic analytics—so your writing keeps working after it's published, not just when it's completed.
Must-Have Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, communications, marketing, or a related field
- 2+ years of professional writing or marketing experience (agency experience preferred)
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with command of grammar and structure
- A writing portfolio that shows range across formats, styles, and voices
- Comfort within the Google Workspace suite
- Ability to take direction and deliver clean drafts without heavy oversight
- Ability to manage multiple projects at once
