🚨JOURNALISM JOBS ALERT🚨

Quartz is starting an exciting new chapter. We’ll have more to share about that later. For now, I’m coming here to do one of my favorite things: hire journalists!

Three new jobs just posted. All fully remote. These roles reflect some of the areas we’re investing in as we build the next phase of Quartz journalism.

SENIOR REPORTER

We’re hiring an experienced and talented Senior Reporter to join our newsroom covering U.S. business news. We’re particularly interested in candidates with an established and impressive body of work covering the worlds of AI and tech. This is not a daily news job. It’s an opportunity for a journalist with significant experience in high-impact business and tech features to double down and focus almost exclusively on deep enterprise reporting.

STAFF REPORTER

We’re also looking for another ambitious and hungry reporter. This is also not a daily news job. It’s an opportunity for a journalist with experience in the fast-paced world of daily business news who is ready to take on high-impact features and enterprise reporting.

EDITOR, AI & OPERATIONS [keep reading]

We’re hiring a systems-minded editor to help lead innovative tech-enabled newsroom operations. This role is a unique opportunity for a journalist who understands how to build and manage editorial workflows that integrate new technologies into the publishing process. We’re looking for someone who sees where the media industry is going — and wants to get there first. Must work East Coast hours, and likely at least some early-bird shifts. While this is initially a full-time contract/freelance position, the successful candidate will turn it into a fast-track to a staff job.

Quartz is seeking an experienced journalist and newsroom leader to serve as Editor, AI & Operations. This is a high-impact leadership role at the center of the media industry’s industry’s strategic and technological transformation. You will be responsible for overseeing, refining, and scaling high-volume publishing operations, driving audience growth while ensuring that Quartz remains an authoritative voice in business news.

As an Editor, you will lead a diverse team of copywriters working within a modern, tech-enabled workflow. You aren’t just editing stories. You are managing a sophisticated content engine. You will balance the speed and scale of a modern, AI-assisted publishing operation with the rigorous accuracy and editorial judgment that define the Quartz brand.

This is a full-time contract position with the potential to transition into a permanent staff role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Editorial Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of copywriters. Be their hourly and daily assigning editor in driving their output, while working with other newsroom leaders to ensure timely and comprehensive coverage of key stories and topics. Support the copywriters’ growth while ensuring they meet ambitious volume and quality targets.
  • Workflow Optimization: Craft, implement, and refine both specific AI prompts and wider Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for AI-assisted, “human-in-the-loop” publishing workflows. Help lead a growing, faster, more automated publishing operation that retains critical touch points with trained journalists.
  • Quality & Integrity: Serve as the ultimate guardian of brand safety. You will oversee the "human-in-the-loop" verification process, identifying and mitigating risks such as factual hallucinations or stylistic drift to ensure every piece of content meets Quartz’s editorial standards.
  • Strategic Refinement: Continually improve the specifications, prompts, and templates used to generate our daily news coverage, slideshows, and more.
  • Knowledge Management: Oversee the development and maintenance of our library of foundational context — the standardized reporting blocks that provide essential background and depth to our global business coverage.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Editor in Chief and Executive Editor to align high-volume production with Quartz’s broader editorial vision and enterprise journalism.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in a digital newsroom, with at least 2+ years as an editor.
  • Proven experience managing writing teams, including remote or international staff.
  • A deep interest in the intersection of journalism and technology, with hands-on experience using generative AI (Gemini, ChatGPT, etc.) to enhance editorial workflows.
  • Exceptional news judgment: You can quickly identify which topics drive audience interest and which require deeper editorial intervention.
  • A "Systems-First" mindset: You enjoy the challenge of building and fixing processes to make a newsroom run more smoothly.
  • Meticulous editing skills and an uncompromising commitment to factual accuracy.
